Abstract:

The Arts and Crafts movement, which is the focus of the first part of the paper, was an art reform movement of the 19th century that emphasized the values of handmade products and their integration into daily life. Key figures such as John Ruskin and William Morris emphasized the beauty and utility of artworks and stressed the connection between aesthetics and functionality. The Red House (1860) and Standen (1894) by Philip Webb, Blackwell (1900) by Baillie Scott, and Broad Leys (1898) by C.F.A. Voysey are outstanding examples of Arts and Crafts architecture, characterized by their harmonious integration of nature and design, emphasis on coziness, and use of local materials. In Austria, the Arts and Crafts movement manifested through architects such as Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann and Josef Frank, who emphasized the concept of the total work of art, functionality and comfort. Their works such as the Paul Khuner country house (1930), Palais Stoclet (1905), and Villa Bunzl (1914) demonstrate the influence of the movement through the connection of craftsmanship and modern design. In the United States, the Arts and Crafts movement reached its peak among architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright. He developed the Prairie School architectural style and promoted the connection between art and industrialization, as seen in Wright’s Robie House (1909).Based on the personal experiences visiting Philip Webb’s the Red House, Standen and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, this work examines the design of a retreat house in Weißenbach am Attersee, Austria, and integrates the design principles of the Arts and Crafts movement with the requirements of the local community. The aim of this design is to preserve the natural environment while expanding access to public spac- es to provide a continuous experience for the community and visitors. Additionally, the central communal space serves as a meeting point for interaction and cultural exchange between residents and visitors. An Arts-and-Crafts Pattern Language, based on Christopher Alexander’s “A Pattern Language” (1977), presents a detailed analysis of vari- ous architectural aspects that influence the functionality and aesthetics of a building. It emphasizes the importance of transition areas, levels of intimacy, staircases, courtyards, connecting corridors, private spaces, and social gathering places. The selection and design of materials also play an important role, with ecological insulation materials highlighted as an environmentally friendly alternative. Overall, an Arts-and-Crafts Pattern Language offers a holistic approach to architecture that considers both the needs of users and ecological aspects.
