Revitalisierung, Restrukturierung und Erweiterung des W&N Gebäudes der Freien Universität Amsterdam

Abstract

Im Rahmen der Diplomarbeit wurde eine Entwurfsstudie für die Restrukturierung, Revitalisierung und Erweiterung des W&N Forschungsbaus auf dem Campus der Freien Universität Amsterdam angefertigt. Die Entwurfsstudie wird angesichts des bevorstehenden Abrisses des Gebäudes im Jahr 2024 erstellt. Die historische und zukünftige Campusentwicklung wird dabei genauer betrachtet. Anschließend werden die entwickelten Strategien zum Erhalt des Bestandsbaus dargestellt. Daraus leitet sich ein Entwurfskonzept ab, welches räumliche Durchlässigkeit durch das Gebäude zum Ziel hat und den Bestandsbaukörper offener und freier strukturieren soll. Nach der Konzepterläuterung wird das Bestandsgebäude hingehend seiner Struktur und seiner Konstruktion, mit dem Schwerpunkt auf bauphysikalische und tragwerksplanerische Aspekte untersucht. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Wärmedurchgangskoeffizienten der Gebäudehülle heutigen Standards nicht gerecht werden und demnach Maßnahmen notwendig sind, um die energetische Leistungsfähigkeit im verlängerten Lebenszyklus des Gebäudes zu optimieren. Bei der Bestandsanalyse stellt sich ebenfalls heraus, dass das verbleibende Tragwerk mit 44.000 Tonnen Stahlbeton aus ökologischer Sicht einen hohen Wert besitzt. Anhand von drei Bauabschnitten wird exemplarisch dargestellt, wie das W&N Gebäude im Rahmen der Entwurfsstudie neu strukturiert, beziehungsweise erweitert wird. Dabei liegt der Fokus vor allem auf den Laborbereichen des Forschungsbaus, Bauabschnitt A. Die Forschungsbereiche mit Zweibundstruktur werden restrukturiert, sodass eine Dokumentationszone ermöglicht, den bestehenden Zweibund zu einer Laborlandschaft zu transformieren. Die Entwurfsstudie wird anhand statischer Analysen und der Modellierung des natürlichen Tageslichtes auf Plausibilität geprüft. Thematisiert werden ebenfalls konstruktive Aspekte, wie die Konzeption neuer Gebäudehüllen für den Bestandsbau. Bauabschnitt B ist ebenfalls Teil des Bestandsgebäudes und erfährt eine Revitalisierung, mit dem Ziel nicht nur Tragstruktur, sondern auch die Bestandsfassade zu erhalten und diese in eine neue Gebäudehülle einzufassen. Bauabschnitt C, der entworfene Anbau an das Bestandsgebäude wird näher erläutert, welcher das W&N Gebäude mit offenen Bürostrukturen erweitern soll.

In this thesis a design study for the restructuring, revitalization and extension of the W&N research building on the campus of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam was produced. The design study is being prepared in anticipationof the demolition of the building in 2024. To begin with, the historical and future campus development will be analyzed. A design concept is based on this, which aims to create spatial openness through the building and structure the existing building in a more open and free way. After describing the concept, the existing building is analyzed in terms of its structure and construction, with a focus on aspects of building physics and structural engineering. It becomes clear that the heat transmission coefficients of the building envelope do not meet today's standards, and that measures are therefore necessary to optimize the energy performance in the extended life cycle of the building. The analysis of the existing building also reveals that the remaining load-bearing structure, at 44.000 tonnes of reinforced concrete, is of high ecological value. Three construction phases are used as examples to illustrate how the W&N building will be restructured and extended as part of the design study. The focus is primarily on the laboratory areas of the research building, which is consideredas building section A. The research areas with a Zweibund structure are restructured so that a documentation zone enables the existing Zweibund to be transformed into an open laboratory environment The design study is checked for plausibility using structural analyses and modelling of natural daylight. Design aspects, such as the conception of new building envelopes for the existing building, are discussed. Section B is also part of the existing building and is being revitalized with the aim of preserving not only the load-bearing structure but also the existing façade and incorporating it into a new building envelope. Building section C, the designed extension to the existing building, is intended to expand the W&N building with open-plan office structures
