Abstract:

Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a type of concrete with very high structural density and characteristically compressive strengths which can be significantly above the strength class C100/115 defined in ÖNORM EN 206-1. Due to its structural density, UHPC can reach a compressive strength of up to 250 N/mm2 and provides excellent durability and can thus also be used in aggressive environments. However, due to its particularly dense structure, UHPC is more susceptible to explosive spalling under fire load than normal or high performance concrete types. This is a result of the vapour movements which are caused by the exposure to fire and which are impaired by the dense concrete mixture. By adding suitable polypropylene fibres and/or steel fibres, this spalling can be prevented. Ultra high performance concrete has a thermal conductivity of approx. 2.5 W/mK. By replacing silica sand and silica flour by ilmenite (titanic iron ore) as aggregate and filler materials, the thermal conductivity can be reduced to approx. 1.6 W/mK. Within the scope of this work, we studied the effects of reducing the thermal conductivity of an ultra high performance concrete on the flaking characteristic under fire load. Furthermore, we studied the properties of fresh concrete and hardened concrete depending on the type of concrete aggregate. The mixtures were separated according to amount and length of the polypropylene fibres and the aggregates silica sand and silica flour were replaced by ilmenite. Nonetheless, the positive properties of ultra high performance concrete should be maintained.
