The location I chose lies north of the City of Krems, and was once a small quarry with a southwest slope. The stone was quarried in such as way as to leave a right angle in the mountain. One side of the angle faces south, the other faces west. The building site abuts the Ufergasse on one side, and the quarry wall on the other, and is only a short walk away from the city center. My goal with this project is the revitalization of the cliff area without disturbing the surrounding landscape. During the development process for this apartment building my main focuses were optimizing on the unique views available, and making sure to design a private living space. My design concept is composed of two adjacent buildings, which seem to have been torn apart from one another. The Foyer fits naturally into the crack (between the building and the existing wall) which lets in plenty of natural daylight through its external, covered roof. Here one has access to the walkways, the elevators, and to the climbing walls located in the crack. The two main access paths detaches itself from the building to become an autonomous, stand alone structure, which is a marriage of architecture and the existing cliff. The so-called walkway leads from a semi-public zone next to the river, up to a viewpoint to the mountain. The design layout of the apartments has the bathrooms, storerooms, kitchens and installation shafts facing the cliff. The living and sleeping areas are designed to face outwards to the southwest, in the direction of the sun.
