In this thesis I present my design process and plan for an apartment complex in Berlin. The focus of this project is on communal living or cohousing. This prominent plot is located at Cuvry Street 50-51, on the riverside of the Spree, in the trendy Kreuzberg district. This district is well-known for its multicultural character and alternative cultural life. In the period 2012-2014 people settled illegally on this undeveloped piece of land. The so-called „Cuvryfavela“ was an act of protest against the increasing commercialization of housing and continued elimination of spaces for public use in the city. The owners of the plot had already submitted several plans for a shopping mall, office building and complex of penthouses. These plans have led to massive demonstrations and protests, mainly initiated by inhabitants of the district. Well-known for their strong social fabric and community spirit, they demanded the realization of a residential building that provides space for social contacts and housing at affordable rents. The concept considers the strong community spirit of the inhabitants of this area and offers different forms of cohousing or communal living. In addition to individual apartments, rooms and facilities are offered that are shared by the tenants. Intentionally some places and rooms are also open for people from outside.
