ROSinante - An open robot base platform for commercial R&D and academia

Abstract

In Forschungs- und Entwicklungsanwendungen werden zunehmend anpassungsfähige Roboterplattformen eingesetzt. Ihre Anwendungen reichen von der Entwicklung von Navigations- und Verhaltensalgorithmen über unterstützende Technologien für Menschenmit besonderen Bedürfnissen, sowie Lastentransportaufgaben in industriellen Szenarien bis hin zur Testautomatisierung. Es existieren jedoch keine offenen (im Sinne von OpenSource und erweiterbaren) und kostengünstigen Lösungen jenseits von Anwendungen mit geringen Anforderungen an Last und/oder Genauigkeit.Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, einen Entwurf für eine erweiterbare und offene Basis Roboterplattform für Anwendungsfälle mit hoher Last und Genauigkeit bereitzustellen.Die Plattform sollte leicht an verschiedene Nutzungsszenarien anpassbar sein. Das Projekt verwendet Open-Source-Lizenzen für alle Teile des Systems von Plänen und Schemata bishin zu Quellcode. Weiters kommen von der Stange verfügbare Komponenten zum Einsatz,wo dies möglich ist.Die Arbeit legt zunächst Anforderungen für ein solches System fest. Im Anschluss wird eine Systemarchitektur zusammen mit ihrer Umsetzung präsentiert. Lösungen für eine Not-Aus-Funktion, ein Funktionsüberwachungssystem und Batteriemanagement werden entwickelt, dokumentiert und veranschaulicht. Die Effektivität der entwickelten Plattform wird durch den Einsatz in einem industriellen Messanwendungsfall illustriert.

In research and development, applications increasingly employ and rely on adaptable robotplatforms. Their applications range from development of navigational and behavioralalgorithms, assistive technologies like people carriers and load carrying tasks in industrialscenarios all the way to test automation. However, no open (as in open-source andextensible) and affordable solutions exist beyond applications with small requirements towards load and/or accuracy.The goal of this thesis is to provide a blueprint for an extensible and open base robotplatform for high load and accuracy use cases. The platform should be easily customizable for adapting to different usage scenarios. The project employs open-source licenses forall parts of the system from plans and schematics to source code as well as the usage ofoff-the-shelf components where possible.The thesis first captured the requirements for such a system. Following, a systemarchitecture is presented together with its implementation. Solutions for emergency stopfunctions, supervisory systems, and battery management are developed, documented,and illustrated. The suitability of the platform to fulfill the established requirements is validated through deployment in an industrial measurement use case.
