Abstract:

The Colosseum in Rome is the largest amphitheater in the world. Although it was built several thousand years ago, there is still disagreement about the actual shape of the floor plan. In the 16th century, surveys of many ancient buildings were conducted, including those of the Colosseum. In the scientific work the focus is on the analysis of the Renaissance drawings of the Colosseum as well as on the study of possible construction methods of the amphitheater based on the ground plan. The focus is on the Colosseum drawings by the so called Anonymus Destailleur and his supposed copyist in the Albertina in Vienna and the Berlin Art Library. Specifically, this concerns sheets 22 to 37 from the Albertina collection.
