This work describes a manufacturing system and method for the ondemand production of large metallic spare parts in a robotic welding cell using a metal-inert/aktiv-gas (MIG/MAG) welding process known as Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). It shows how the same approach may be extended to the repair of worn metallic parts. In this case, the manufacturing system has been equipped with an optical 3D geometry acquisition device to become capable of automatically detecting the damaged regions of the parts.
The presentation also describes an algorithmic approach, which allows to locate the damaged part inside the machine's working envelope. Machine path generation may be challenging for a generic defined repair task with a non-planar base surface and for the production of spare parts, which consist of "overhanging" areas. This presentation proposes an algorithm capable of producing a valid machine program under such circumstances.
