Polymer based fillings are successively replacing amalgam as well as glass cement fillings in the area of dental medicine. High biocompatibility and tunable aesthetics were major factors responsible for the high demand of polymer based fillings. Meanwhile, curing times are in an acceptable range and drawbacks such as shrinkage during polymerization and hardness deficiencies have been overcome by now by embedding of ceramic and/or glass particles into the polymer. However, adhesion between the polymer and the filler or the enamel has to be enhanced, to improve the durability and wear properties of such fillings.
In the present work coupling molecules, i.e. (macro-)molecules that are able to undergo strong interactions with both polymer matrix and inorganic filler, with different anchoring groups are synthesized and grafted onto different inorganic dental fillers. Characterization towards the bonding character of the respective coupling molecule is carried out. Interaction with zirconia is of special interest, due to its wide availability as well as mechanical and x-ray absorbing characteristics. By variation of the chain length and branching structure of the coupling agents important molecule structure-property relationships may be drawn. The surface treated particles are embedded in a model polymer matrix and the prepared cements are characterized towards their thermal and mechanical properties.
