This diploma thesis is describing the history of-, and a possible future for two agricultural storage buildings in Brixen, South Tyrol. It will first look back at the origins and the later rededication of the complex. In the following chapters it is proposing a reclamation project and further architectural developments of the site.First built in 1722, the construction originally served as storehouses for the „Elephant“ hotel. In the middle of the 20th century the „cellar-house“ and the „ice-cellar“ lost its original use. The inventory of the „Elephant“ was upgradet and equipped with refrigerators. As a result, in 1972 the historical structures were reallocated as residential buildings for the innkeepers of the hotel. The use of the ensemble as a housing complex contradicts its historical purpose. The disparity between the vast extent of the site and the limited requirements of the inhabitants towards it is evident. In this thesis I am offering a proposal to modify the existing buildings and to expand the ensembe towards the adjacent property. The project describes the future development of the ensemble as an agri-touristical complex including spaces for the distribution of wine and conservation of food, guestrooms, a garden and an archive. The intervention is aiming towards a new balance between the existing structure and the requirements of its users. A new building and the conversion of the existing ones present a possible strategy for the longevity of architecture by providing flexibility and adaptability for future developments as central aspects of planning.
