Indentation testing is a useful tool to describe the mechanical behaviour of small volumes of materials. In this work microhardness measurements were done on different polypropylene materials, with significantly varying micro- and macromorphology. Homopolymes, Copolymers and blends were subjects of the investigations. The role of the molecular weight, the type and the content of comonomer and the blend composition was investigated. A comparison of the hardness properties of the #alpha#- and the #beta#- phase of PP was carried out. Besides the chemical structure and the material composition it is also the cooling rate and annealing processes which determine the final morphology. Since these two parameters are important for the preparation of PP in industrial processes, their influence on the PP-morphology was investigated in this work. Some examples of application of microhardness testing for the description of polymer parts and components were shown. Both conventional microhardness measurements and instrumented indentation tests are the base of this work. The later one allows not only the determination of hardness, which is a mainly plastic property. With instrumented testing a indentation modulus, which gives information about elastic properties, can be determined. All measurements were done with loads covering the lower micro regime. The specimens were prepared in a hot stage. Microscopical, thermoanalytical and x-ray scattering methods were used to describe the morphologies or the variations of morphology.
