Abstract:

The Northern Burgenland is known for its flat and extensive landscape, the Lake Neusiedl and numerous small villages. The long-stretched agricultural compounds are representative of these traditionally closed village structures. Once built for the requirements of agriculture, these days the construction type is increasingly struggling with decay. One of the main reasons is the incompatibility of the traditional structures with todays requirements concerning the way of living. This thesis addresses the local structures and urban planning aspects of Northern Burgenland, the history and various types of the long-stretched compounds, and an analysis of the different designs and their evolution in the 20th century. The focus of the thesis lies on buildings in the villages situated on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl. It examines how they have changed over time, how they have been rebuilt, and how all of these aspects affected the building type and its residents. The thesis concludes with a remodeling concept that focuses on one specific building and shows the potential future uses of this difficult, but exceptionally special building type.
