Filipczak, P. (2015).

The Centennial Hall in Wrocaw is an important masterpiece of structural engineering which is regarded as a pioneering architectural project of the Modernist movement. The UNESCO world heritage site was built in 1912, according to the designs of the German architect Max Berg. With its imposing structure it embodies the revolutionary developments in the field of concrete construction in the early 20th century. At the beginning of the 21st century following a period of decades lacking proper maintenance the Centennial Hall was in urgent need of modernization. A building condition analysis showed that the discovered damage was characteristic for historical reinforced concrete structures of this period and predominantly represented an aesthetic blemish of the building. Furthermore, the necessity of securing the ribbed dome's tension ring-beam was identified - one of the key elements of the buildings structural design. From March 2009 to September 2011 the first complete renovation and modernization of the Centennial Hall took place since its construction. The project was largely financed by European Union funds. The aim of this scientific work is both to demonstrate the importance of the Centennial Hall as a pioneering achievement of early history of reinforced concrete structures, as well as to document the buildings condition after almost one hundred years of use and the conducted fundamental refurbishment. Hence the thesis is divided into three parts: Part I comprises the architectural and structural aspects of the Centennial Hall. In consideration of the historical context the development of the construction project and the construction are described and discussed in regards to the former state of the art in reinforced concrete construction. Based on the building condition assessment carried out in 2007 and 2008, part II documents the characteristic damage of the Centennial Hall and its causes as well as the results of the construction material analysis and summarized expert recommendations. Part III covers the documentation of maintenance and modernization measures conducted from 2009 to 2011. Included are construction documents and design documentation, research data from journals and personal on-site research information gathered during the repair of the facade and the securing of the tension ring-beam. In conclusion, the maintenance and modernization measures are compared with internationally acknowledged principles of historic preservation. This evaluation points out differences between the performed repairs of the facade in contrast to state of the art methods of gentle concrete restoration of historically valuable buildings. This concerns mainly the use of standard repair mortars and glaze coatings based on sol-silicate.
