Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Cuban Almendares River flows towards northwest, intersecting the neighborhoods Miramar and El Vedado in Havana. The river serves as one of the main fresh water supplier for the city, and the Almendares Aquifer arm is still covering the majority of Havana-s water demand today. The adjacent urban area alongside this waterfront has been a scene of different social, urban and architectural developments. In addition to informal settlements and several abandoned factories, the area suffers from severe industrial and urban waste dumping. Moreover, frequent flooding, especially in the northern part of the river constitutes a severe danger. The entire area lacks accessible public space, recreational zones and sufficient housing. Another issue is inaccessibility along the waterfront. Fences, storage buildings, small industries and other physical barriers separate the waterfront from the surrounding urban area. The aim of this masters thesis was to analyse the urban potential, and to suggest a strategy for revitalizing, linking and incorporating the adjacent urban areas with the Almendares Riverfront. Here, I will present ideas and concepts for different types of structural interventions to facilitate new impulses for the local urban and regional development of this district.
