Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the Kofl Hof, a farmstead in the Valle Aurina, South Tyrol. The farm consists of a farmhouse, a barn/stable, a granary and a baking oven. A theory section summarizing the individual building units and their respective traditional value will precede a detailed study and analysis unit of the object. This allows the reader to familiarize with the building type and the resulting lifestyle for its inhabitants. Then, with respectful consideration for the original building, a design will remodel the unused barn/stable into a vacation home for children and youths. Bathroom, kitchen, dining room and free space for games are integrated into the masoned ground floor. The overlying two-story barn will consist of bedrooms, a group room and a covered open area. On the outside the consistent design of a log construction should be preserved, while the characteristic elements of a barn should remain present on the inside. The material for the interior will be selected in such a way as to differ from the original in distinctive spots, while essentially continuing the theme of wood, stone and rock. This work aims at demonstrating that the purpose of the unused barn/stable can be redefined without destroying its original character.
