Besau, F. G. (2012). Optimal transport on the n-Sphere [Diploma Thesis, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://resolver.obvsg.at/urn:nbn:at:at-ubtuw:1-51964
In this thesis I study problems of optimal transport of measures, in particular on the euclidean n-sphere, thoroughly and as explicit as possible. In an introductory chapter I present the theory of convex functions and in particular the dual correspondence of convex functions and their conjugates by means of the Legendre transformation.
I formulate the Monge as well as the Kantorovich version of the optimal transport problem and prove the important Kantorovich Duality.
Furthermore, I solve the optimal Transport Problem explicitly on the real line and use this result to solve the optimal transport problem on the unit circle explicitly. The main theorem of this thesis is the solution of the optimal transport problem on the n-sphere by McCann. To prove this, I introduce differential calculus on the n-sphere as well as a version of Rademachers Theorem.
