Steineder, D. (2009). Collective behavior of an ultrarelativistic plasma in an anisotropically expanding geometry [Diploma Thesis, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://resolver.obvsg.at/urn:nbn:at:at-ubtuw:1-33316
The fast thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma that is observed experimentally for heavy-ion collisions is not completely understood yet. Plasma instabilities may play an important role, if the achieved energy densities in such collisions are high enough for perturbative methods to be valid. In this thesis we study the collective behavior of an ultrarelativistic and anisotropically expanding plasma in the hard-loop approximation. We consider an Abelian plasma, which gives an upper bound for the growth of non-Abelian instabilities. We investigate general initial conditions for the integro-differential equations, which describe the evolution of the collective modes. We find that initial currents are needed to treat (stable) longitudinal modes. Furthermore for the instabilities the delay in the onset of growth is reduced significantly compared to earlier studies, when we take initial currents into account. Additionally we study the evolution of modes with an arbitrary orientation of the wave vector with respect to the anisotropy and thus considered a fully 3+1 dimensional situation. Implications for a quark-gluon plasma are discussed.
