Abstract:
An ERP-System (Enterprise Resource Planning) is used to support all business process through a corporate wide information system. This kind of information system is used by large scale enterprises and combines with several settlements and also by small and medium enterprises (SME).
This work presents an ERP-System selection process which is specially suited to SMEs. This selection process should be a read thread and should allow SMEs to process it independently. The first section of this work describes ERP-Systems and their historical development. It also gives an overview of the market situation and which ERP sellers can be found. Next the components of ERP-Systems and the concerning business functions are explained. The systems of AP AG and SAP AG are presented to get an impression of their complexity.
The second part describes the influence of technologies on the system selection and the importance of software project management and requirements management & engineering concerning an ERP project. The focus of the second part lies on the definition of the own ERP-System selection process and a discussion with software selection methods from the literature. The described ERP-System selection process is sequential, incremental and iterative and consists of the three main project phases project organization, customer requirements specification and system selection. To show how this selection process works in practice it was successfully applied to an Austrian medium sized manufacturing company. The results can be found in the third part of this work. The application of each project phase is described in detail. A summary and discussion of the results can be found in the conclusion.
