Abstract:

This thesis can be seen as a comparison of the traditional, mineral constructing of multi storey buildings with the new multi storey timber constructions. It will be elaborated under which conditions the timber constructions (in its manifestations as solid or lightweight construction) can compete with the conventional built buildings, without emphasizing the aspects of ecology and sustainability. The answer can be found in the application of modern methods of management or adapted forms of organization. The main part of this work lies in the analytical area with a qualitative content analysis through expert interviews and their evaluation. The thesis starts with essential characteristics of the building material wood, its chemical and macroscopic structure, its strength and fire resistance, its characteristics as a building material and the ecology of wood itself. Subsequent are the depictions of wood as a fundamental building material of human building culture, the prehistoric construction and ongoing the basic types of traditional and current constructions as a basic approach to the subject – building with wood. Last but not least, the solid wood construction is presented as a timber construction of modern times in multi-storey buildings. As mentioned in the introduction, the project organization in general and specially in timber construction is discussed as a central measure for the competitiveness of timber structures, before the fundamentals of empirical inquiry and analysis are treated. The focus here is on the interview itself, the selection of the interviewees, the goal of the empirical research and finally the expert interview which got applied and carried as method of this work. The analysis to it follows the methods of Philipp Mayring. The results of the analysis are summarized in the sections: Project Phases, Processes and Types of Contracting. They can be found in lean management, applied to the construction industry and ultimately lead to lean construction and construction site 4.0.
