This paper investigates the overall process of design, planning and the subsequently 1:1 construction site of a single family house, responding to and integrating the social and economic particularities of a vi-llage community from Transylvania region, Romania. The primary intention of this paper is to explore architecture’s practical potential as a viable tool in improving life quality for vulnerable communities. The content is structured in two separate books. The first part focuses on the theoretical study of this particular community from a social, historic, economic and architectural/urbanistic point of view; based on the analysed data and specific family needs or patterns, a design concept for a simple house prototype is brought forward within the last chapter. The aspects of sustainability, interlacing economic, ecologic and social aspects are definitory parts of the solution proposal. The second part of this paper documents the practical implementation process, with its different stages from the starting point of the construction site and concluding with the overall impact assessment on its beneficiaries. The reality of the village context was essential in the production of this project: the economic and administrative limitations that define the community’s daily life have been fully incorporated in the design process: low-cost and do-it-yourself concepts facilitated the better understanding and direct applicabi- lity of the project on a long-term perspective. As a consequence, the beneficiaries experienced more initiative and empowerment, gained practical know-how and better understood their ressources and potentials – all within a safe, friendly and stimu- lating working environment.
