This paper aims to use new technologies and digital learning methods to provide a new form of architectural mediation. Augmented realitys (AR) fitness for use in the context of exploring Viennas coffee houses is being evaluated and their mutual support is demonstrated. The thesis contains an introductory theoretical part which is followed by a practical one, in which an AR App for smartphones will be developed. The problem statement will be illustrated in the introduction, as well as the current forms of architectural mediation. The next chapter talks about augmented reality, its historical development and pinpoints it through examples from architectural practice. For completion, ARs presentation methods will be described and an outlook for the future will be given. Furthermore it is dealt with the applied learning method “serious games” and its basics and principles. After that, the selected coffee houses and their distinctive architectural marks will be presented. Among others, the work of Heinrich von Ferstel, Oswald Haerdtl and Hermann Czech are examined, thus giving an overview of the different time periods and architectural styles. The implementation of the theoretical part follows in the main part. By means of an AR App, users will be guided through Vienna and encouraged to visit coffee houses through clues, find the answers via Augmented Reality and learn about the specific elements. First off, an introduction to the used programs Unity3D and Vuforia will be made, with particular focus on the required technical basics and the workflow of a successful augmentation. The next part deals with the results of the project, where the selected coffee houses are examined and assessed through augmentations in the form of work reports. It will be shown how real objects are being augmented with digital content and how the architecturally interested user is learning about the history of architectural elements in coffee houses from the 19th century until today, enriching architectural mediation with contemporary methods.
