The current education system in Austria is the result of a development over centuries. This procss is still going on today. It finds expression through school reforms, adaptation of legislation or the development of pedagogical concepts. Meanwhile, the current concepts call for such changes in the way teaching is done that not only the teachers but also the architects have to respond. The market town of Hard needed a new school, meeting those teaching standards. Thats why the competition “Schulen am See ” was launched in 2014. It was won by “ Baumschlager Hutter Partners” and the school opened its doors in autumn 2018. The first two chapters of this thesis are devoted to the research of the place as well as the school development in Austria. Their goal is to understand the needs regarding the new school of both, the market community of Hard and the pedagogical concept. Building on this, a design of the school building follows, complying with the competition requirements and incorporating the pedagogical concept. The draft is not intended to question the already realized school, but merely to bring up other possibilities and to encourage discussions.
