The „Green Leaf Eco Retreat“ is a hotel project which focuses on the topic of sustainable building, planning and design in a tropical region. In the first part of this thesis, subjects like sustainability, the global green building sector, ecotourism, international green building certification programs and green buildings in India, are examined. In addition there is a short interview about local sustainable building strategies and standards with the Indian green building expert and architect, Dhruv Futnani. The research on different methods of the vernacular architecture of southern India, as well as the analyses on the climate and site conditions, are playing an important role in the development of the architectural concept. The key aim in the building and landscape design is to focus on traditional and sustainable building materials, to use only renewable energy resources and to integrate water harvesting and water treatment methods.
