Abstract:

Subject of this diploma thesis is the study of non-institutional learning environments for children in the public space, putting particular focus on the way children see and perceive their way to school. The public space, specifically the street area seen as everyday space for children will be explored in its function as a social learning zone. The assumption that children’s personality development depends significantly on factors outside of their regular educational curriculum and conventional learning and teaching methods, sets the basis of this thesis. A child’s education and learning experience is commonly exclusively attributed to institutional facilities, such as primary and high schools, neglecting the various other learning spaces that exist. However, along with the living environment and the parental home, the public space also plays a fundamental role as educational zone. Through literature research and the application of different methodological approaches, this diploma thesis illustrates different aspects of the urban everyday life of children and analyses these in reference to processes of appropriation and production of space. Further, this paper aims to uncover the different educational aspects the public street space can fulfill for children and how this can be applied to child-friendly urban planning.
