Locarno is a municipality in the district of Locarno and a capital of the district of Locarno in the Swiss canton of Ticino. For years there has been the question and the ambition, whether and how the entire canton of Ticino can be further developed and perceived as a coherent city (Citta Tessin). Cities such as Airola, Biasca, Bellinzona, Locarno, Lugano, Mendrisio and Chiasso are intended to represent the new urban model of the city of Ticino (Citta Ticino). With the expansion of the Gotthard railway, measures are taken, which lead to a better connection in the whole canton. At the end of the 19th century, the canton (and the region around Locarno) was considered as a part of the poorest region in Switzerland. After the commissioning of the Gotthard Railway (1882) the stand changes. In this respect, the historic train station is a strategic place with many potentials. The station is located in the area of the municipality of Muralto, on the municipal boundary to Locarno. At the moment, Locarno Station is more like an invisible barrier between the two community centres. Recently, there is an interest in building a convention centre on the station area. The goal is on the one hand an extension of the existing small congress hall, on the other hand to build its own house for the film festival. The design ultimately seeks to enhance the current situation at the historic train station in Locarno-Muralto. As part of the extension of the station area several uses are offered. An event centre with congress hall, an exhibition room and a restaurant area are planned.
