After a detailed analysis of the company structure and a quick overview in the product structure, the entire product range was divided into modules. Basically, the range were divided in three large modules to a drop down tree structure. For the three main modules, all projects of the last three financial years were used and presented according to their characteristics and turnovers. To break down the modules, a program was created in Excel based on Visual Basic Implements. This program makes it possible to read the parts lists of different projects, to compare them and create an intersection of the projects. Furthermore, all data not included in the intersection will be checked for duplicates and output. In the first step, the three main modules were compared and split to next level modules, based on the intersection of the main modules. From the next level, groups of greatest similarity were derived. Furthermore, these groups of subjects were divided into internal and general groups. Where internal groups include module-related components, whereas general groups contain components that are used across all modules. These internal groups should not only serve the reuse of the components in the individual departments, but also bring a standard to the product range. In the case of the general group, care was always taken to refer to the feature lists from DIN 4000. In cases where no DIN 4000 feature list was available, features were used by eCl@ss or from data of the standards association with the components. This classification brings an enormous time saving as well as a reduction of the work effort for the purchasing department and the spare parts department. The research and development department use this classification to the effect that new developments can be made by using already developed components, thus saving both time and acquisition costs. Soon the company Benninghoven would like to carry out the update of the ERP system and work according to the new standard, which resulted in the development of the feature list.
