A four-sided courtyard, in the center of an old rural village structure, is nowadays only a leftover element of the past. The structural changes in agriculture and the increasing migration are leading to the vacancy or demolition of this type of building. In addition, the demographic change is also being massively felt in the peripheral regions. The older generation needs a place, especially in the countryside, to age with dignity. This work deals with a historical four-sided courtyard in Kroisbach an der Feistritz, which offers the ideal starting point for a sheltered residence for elderly people due to its central location, the large front garden and the good connection to the state road. From the historical substance of the four-sided courtyard, as well as the newly created areas, not only rooms for a day care centre and a small doctor‘s surgery for a general practitioner, but also a familiar place for elderly people who find their home here.
