In times of transformation in the industrial and knowledge society, factors such as creativity and innovation are essential for future-proofing regions. Creative industries have received a lot of attention in the recent past, as they are viewed as beacons of hope in terms of helping cities and regions to sustainably develop. In the past, creative industries have mainly been seen as an exclusive phenomenon to cities. It is also however essential to develop more rural areas by accessing what scope creative industries can have to help develop such areas. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by researching the value add of Creative Industries on rural areas, via the example of the region of 'Burgenland' in Austria. Firstly therefore the creative industry will be presented with a special focus on terminology, definitions, history and development. Following this, the empirical research aims to analyse if there is a added value for communities and regions, by interviewing leaders of the creative industry sector. Several companies have been selected as participants. Concluding from the conducted research, recommendations of action will be presented, to further help the development of creative industries in the ‘Burgenland region.
