Abstract:

Rural landscapes on the Adriatic islands and coastline are changing irretrievably under the pressure of mass tourism. Traditional lifestyle that is closely linked to agriculture has almost disappeared, and many villages and rural structures are being abandoned due to the lack of activities and employment. The Croatian coastal region is today the most visited rural region in Europe, but such a title is rarely justified due to its non rural character. Scattered expansion of accommodation capacities is in full swing and deviates greatly from the scale of rural architecture. Tourism and temporary visitors can hardly have an positive impact on a survival of rural areas. Without permanent residents living in these areas throughout the year, it is not possible to preserve or further develop specific local identities, culture or architecture. This thesis is a research of rural architecture and tourism developments in the Croatian coastal region. Also, it presents a broader vision of the revival of villages and rural structures and proposes a specific revitalization project in the Nature park Učka. Due to the potential opportunity to continue working on the implementation of the revitalization project, this specific topic will be examined and discussed.
