The expansion in the European long-distance coach market has severe impacts on Austria, which has risen the number of national and international long-distance bus connections in recent years. For instance, since the largest German-Austrian long-distance coach cooperation between Blaguss Reisen GmbH and FlixMobility GmbH in 2014 numerous direct connections from Vienna to Nuremberg and Frankfurt as well as from Vienna to Dresden and Berlin offered. However, the expansion in long-distance bus travel inevitably leads to shifting effects from other modes of transport, which means that the expansion in the long-distance bus market leads to positive as well as negative effects due to the intermodal competition situation, especially among modes of transport such as long-distance bus, train, car and airplane. In the following work, the first step will be to look at the long-distance bus market in Austria in order to analyze the effects, both in traffic, user-specific, operator-specific and economic aspects, which are accompanied by the expansion of the Austrian long-distance bus service. The central results of the analysis form a basis for the definition of action recommendations for transport and environmental policy in order to provide a future-oriented view of the developments on the long-distance bus market in Austria.
