In contrast to other European countries the construction of public buildings and the design of the urban space have not been very important to the government in Bulgaria in the recent decades. Compared to the development of the capital Sofia, this tendency is even more pronounced for the smaller cities like Varna. Optimistically, this means a great development potential for the city, as well as motivation for young architects and spatial designers to be able to change something in the existing situation. As a future architect, and because of my emotional attachment to my roots and to my hometown, I felt the natural desire to contribute to this positive development. This master thesis consists of two parts: the reconstruction of the harbor area in the Bulgarian city Varna, in form of a new master plan of the district, and the design of a multi-purpose theater at this port. ^The first part, which contains the urban development plan is devoted to a fundamental analysis of the city and its needs, which was carried out on the basis of the current plan for the development of Varna Municipality and the Urban Development Plan. Afterwards are presented the project area, its historical background and the future projects for the harbor area. On the basis of all these explorations, as well as the resulting concept ideas, a master plan was prepared for the port in Varna. It presents a new, invigorating district with residential and office buildings, a scientific technology center and an attractive public area with sports and leisure facilities. This creates a quarter that is both an attraction for the tourists and a meeting place for the public on the waterside and restores the lost connection of the area with the sea. The second part of this work introduce the design of a multi-purpose theater for combined performances- opera, ballet, drama and concerts. ^Cultural buildings of this kind show a identifying architectural character and turn into landmarks for the cities to which they belong. They are of great urban importance and can play an important role in the economic life of a city. For this reason in the idea-finding process was placed a great emphasis on the multifunctionality of the building. It has been intended an architectural design, which creates an important public space outside the building borders, where culture and the public can meet. Music and theater and the experience of different performances were always a great passion of mine. As a spectator, I was always impressed by the apparent part of the stage. Only then, when I dealt with the subject of theater constructions within the extensive researches for the purpose of this master thesis, I realized how immense a theater stage is “from behind” and how many rooms with the various functions it conceals. ^The complexity of this planning task, according to the varied space program and the necessary technical knowledge, confronted me with a great challenge, but has always aroused my interest during the work process.
