Eating is a topic which concerns people throughout their whole lives, each and every day. There is barely anything, being done so frequently and regularly. Nevertheless, it is paramount to recognize that the culture revolving around food is in constant flux. In earlier days, home-grown food was painstakingly harvested, processed and prepared in various ways. With the decline of feudal society, being replaced by the industrial age, fast and easy ways to prepare food was of more concern than the quality of said food. Todays knowledge based society tends to combine both of these aspects. Food culture is now being showered with attention. Preparing and cooking food should still be quick and easy, but with increasing globalisation and the depletion of our natural resources, the conscious decision, which food to buy is becoming more important. It is not only the quality of the product which is garnering attention, but also the way these products are presented, prepared and how they are being enjoyed in social gatherings, is becoming an integral part of our daily life and our social interactions. Globalisation not only adds to the availability of food from all around the globe, but also leads to different people and cultures blending together. People are leaving their homes for a variety of reasons and start a new life in new places. Cultures and traditions may vary, but one thing combines all people: Cooking and eating transcends boundaries. In consideration of all these aspects, I want to plan a market hall for my home town of Linz-Urfahr. In my opinion, this part of town is lacking in the food and service industry, as well as in social variety. This market hall serves regional and seasonal products in addition to offering select international products. It is not only presenting these products and offering places of purchase, but opens up a place for collaborative food preparation to increase the blending of food cultures. At the same time, this market hall is offering people a new home. Social interaction and diversity should naturally develop a space, in which learning and educating is being encouraged. A multicultural place, to pause, and appreciate the communal cooking, is being created.
