Alone together? Student residence in Regensburg! Regarding the development of student accommodations in Austria, it is noticeable that the majority of these residences have developed from mostly commonly shared areas into individual rooms with full facilities. Currently, student dormitories are being built with single rooms, which apart from sleeping and workplace also offer a wet room with shower, toilet, sink and a kitchenette. These room cells are usually arranged next to each other on a middle passage, the sanitary area and the kitchenette facing inside and the living area exposed to the outer facade. This concept bears similarity to a typical hotel room. Even though both accommodations represent a form of temporary housing, they differ massively in their essence. While hotel guests usually stay only on a short-term and autonomous basis, residents of student accommodations are open for encounters, usually seeking contact to and interaction with their flatmates. These specific requirements I would like to address as basis of my design project. The planning area is located in the Kasernenviertel district of Regensburg, south of the main railway station and east of the Regensburg University campus. On the site of the demolished Nibelungenkaserne the Regensburg Technology Campus is being built, which, in addition to the TechBase Regensburg, will also offer university buildings, partly subsidized residential buildings and a kindergarten, as well as a student residence for about 150 people.
