In the course of a competition, the Schlaun Forum is looking for ideas for the revitalization of a former electrical engineering factory in Aachen. Since there aren't any requirements given, the competition participants can decide which functions should be integrated into the building. An analysis of the urban environment should reflect the needs of Aachen's population, which will influence the concept of con- version. Another basis for the design is a detailed inventory of the Garbe-Lahmeyer Hall. Because of the results of these researches, I prefer a mixed use of temporary residential units, art ateliers and a museum as a concept. The new architecture should show a high degree of flexibility and a wide variety of utilization. In the course of the design process, I will make a comprehensive research about industrial buildings, from a historical perspective as well as current ex- amples of revitalized factories. In the end the thesis is to be a design, based on this research, which is a possible example in dealing with existing industrial buildings.
