In this work I want to show the development of public libraries in the digital age. Therefore I took a look on three public libraries of the last twenty years, to analyse them in respects of programmatic, connection to there context in the city and the general public library system. Afterwards I want to show my design of a new public library in vienna build on a research in terms of the location and the program. The first library in my research is the 'Seattle Central Library' by Rem Koolhaas and his office OMA, the second is the 'Sendai Mediatheque' by Tojo Ito and the third is the 'Idea Stores' in London by David Adjaye. The Seattle Central Library transfers the parameter of a typical american city into a building. The Sendai Mediatheque develops the concept of the 'maison domino' by Le Corbusier into a new form of democratic Building. The Idea Stores in London in respects of the teamwork by politics and planers and the concept based on a extensive research program. All three Buildings show, in different ways, how it is possible to design a public library in the changing times of the digital age. My project is located at the site of the former clothing store ¿Tlapa¿ at Favoritenstraße in the 10th district in Vienna. The district Favoriten is in current statistics, based on educational standards in Austria, last ranked. That is why i choose this site for my diploma. The concept is to develop a hybrid which connects the library with programs of the life long learning program and functions for leisure activities. In combination with the site in a busy shopping street, the use of this building should become part of the every day life of the locals. The open structure of the building, with the extensive outdoor staircase into the public space and the combination with the, all time available, public areas on top of it, should help to appropriate the library as a factor of identification to the residents of the 10th district.
