The first part of this thesis, is an analysis about the cultural landscape, and his connection to the farmsteads and the agriculture, in a region called Innviertel in Upper Austria. Thru a scientific walk in the municipal of Utzenaich, and the resulting photographic essay, transformation processes of the landscape become visible. Further the common farm-typology in this region, named ¿open four-sided courtyard¿, is analyzed, based on six examples in Utzenaich. The focus is on the current usage of the structure, and the implemented transformation of the typology. In the second part of this thesis, this acquired knowledge is used to develop a design concept, for the farmyard named Grafwirt and his surrounding fields and forests. Crucial for the design is the detailed understanding of the structure, of each building on the farmyard. To find the right balance between the new and the existent, is the aim of this thesis.
