Modern Tube - meine Planung für den Erweiterungsbau des Wien Museum Karlsplatz war in mehrfacher Hinsicht eine interessante Herausforderung: Da ist zum einen der historische Standort am ehemaligen Glacis im unmittelbaren Vorfeld der barocken Karlskirche aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, zum anderen der bestehende denkmalgeschützte schlichte Museums-Bau von Oswald Haerdtl aus den 50er Jahren selbst, der zu erhalten ist und dazu die Einhaltung aller Denkmalschutz- und städtebaulich-architektonischen Bestimmungen, die hier kein spektakuläres Einzelprojekt zulassen, sondern eine sensible Symbiose zwischen Alt und Neu erforderlich machen und trotzdem ein zeitgemäßes Statement darstellen, dass der Bedeutung dieser Zone angemessen ist und eine städtebauliche Weiterentwicklung in hoher Qualität sichert. Mein Entwurf sieht eine, über dem Museumsbau selbst und nach Westen hin weit auskragende schwebende Stahlbeton- Glaskonstruktion vor ¿ die tube - deren zwei Betonstützen einerseits als statische Komponente fungieren, andererseits aber Leichtigkeit und Durchlässigkleit vermittelndes Element sind und damit - so meine Intention - verbindend als harmonisches Gesamtgefüge dem Platz eine neue Dimension geben.

Modern Tube - my design for the expansion of the Vienna Museum Karlsplatz was an interesting challenge in several terms. On the one hand there is the historical location on the former Glacis in front of the 18th century baroque Karlskirche. On the other hand there is the clean, monument-protected museum of Oswald Haerdtl from the 1950s. The maintenance of this historical building is one of the most important aspects and the handling of this monument-protected museum must be approached cautiously. It does not allow any spectacular individual project, but instead, it requires a sensible symbiosis between old and new. It should nevertheless be a contemporary statement that the importance of this area is appropriate and that a high-quality urban development is ensured. The idea behind my design is a wide floating steel, concrete and glass construction. That will then be placed on top of the old historical museum and should reach far westwards to the Otto Wagner Pavilions. The tube being raised by two massive reinforced concrete piers, which are used as a static component and are also an element of ease and permeability. The intention behind my design is to create a harmonic structure between old and new and to give the space a new impression
