Aleksandrova, D. (2014).

This master thesis aims to investigate the suitability of wood oil as a regenerating agent for aged bitumen. The principles of rheology are discussed to provide a better understanding of the applied test methods. The description of materials covers the production, chemical composition and properties of bitumen and wood oil. Applied test methods - simulating aging of bitumen, conventional and performance-based tests are described according to the relevant European standard. A program of tests is created to evaluate the influence of adding wood oil to the performance properties of bitumen. Bitumen with penetration grade 70/100 is aged first by RTFOT and then by PAV. Pyrolysis oil derived from woody biomass is distilled. 5 and 10% mixtures of long-term aged bitumen and distilled wood oil are prepared. Conventional (needle penetration, softening point - ring and ball and Fraass breaking point) and performance based tests (RV, DSR and BBR) are carried out with samples from bitumen in its original state, long-term aged bitumen and the 5 and 10% mixtures. Results of the tests are presented and evaluated.
