The course of the Isar river in Munich is framed by a greenway on both sides. Nevertheless, the area close to the Isar offers only few local recreation opportunities. The eastern bank was renaturalized in the recent years and allows some recreation on the flood meadows, but the modification of the inner-city west bank area was not taken into consideration. The latter was constructed straight-lined towards the end of 19th century and formed a bluff bank, which has led to a noticeable demarcation of the Isar to the city center. Based on an analysis of the city and its adjoining areas along the riverside, the western Isar space should be transformed to an integrated part of the urban structure with urban leisure and recreational spaces. In particular, the project will show possibilities to provide better accessibility from the Glockenbachviertel to the Isar. It is precisely here, in one of the most vibrant areas of the city, where green areas are missing. A new connection to the green spaces of the Isar could create a very soothing balance.
