Abstract:

The Portuguese architects Fernando Távora und Eduardo Souto de Moura rank amongst the most important representatives of the school of Oporto and are an integral part of Portuguese building culture. Both architects have renovated former monasteries in northern Portugal and transformed them into Pousadas, state run luxury hotels. Fernando Távora's work 'Santa Marinha da Costa' in Guimaraes, which was refurbished and rebuilt 1977-1985 and Eduardo Souto de Mouras project 'Santa Maria do Bouro' in Amares, 1989-1997. This works were selected according to their importance but also in terms of the two contrary approaches, mind sets and concepts that the two architects represent in terms of the methods of interventions. An analysis of the two patrimonial monuments, historically and as well as analyzing the approach of the architect's spiritual mindset and background, will lead to guidelines and a deeper understatement of how these two representers of the 'Escola do Porto' deal with monuments preservation in the second half of the 20th century.
