Seestadtareal Bregenz an urban area at the lake of Constance Since the late 19th century, the old railway station from Austro-Hungarian Monarchy times was located on the Seestadtareal in Bregenz. It was demolished during the construction of the new railway station in the fall of 1989. Since then, the area lay idle and was used as a parking area. In 2009, Bregenz-s city council decided on the masterplan to develop the Seestadtareal in Bregenz. The masterplan was developed by the Prisma consortium, which is the principal owner of the premises. Public spaces, public and individual transport, railway station, and the connection between lake and city were considered, but because a private investor is at work, every square meter is utilized to the fullest extent and - by Bregenz's standards - a large 'center of commerce' is created that in my opinion will more likely be a competition than an addition to the nearby pedestrian zone. In the course of my master thesis, I want to develop an alternative that offers as many public and semi-public spaces as possible, that creates a generous connection between city and lake and that functions as an extension of the existing pedestrian zone.
