Subject of the present work is the draught of a multifunctional High-rise in Harlem, New York. The idea for the theme originated during my study trip to New York, in which period the New York City government enrolled a rezoning program for the revaluation of Central Harlem. An important point of the rezoning program was the preservation and creation of cultural spaces, as well as provide a mixture of different forms of utilization like living-, office- and commercial spaces. As a result, I chose as building type a Hybrid- High-rise, consisting of a cultural center with connected residential and office spaces. On account of the location of the construction site in the heart of Harlem, at the junction of the most important connecting road between Uptown and Downtown Manhattan, and the main shopping and party boulevard, as well as the location on the opposite side oft he only high rise of the area, I wanted to create an architectural entry situation für the area. Another important factor is the building flexibility, and the possibility to adapt the building on changing demands. For these reason, I chose a steel frame construction, which renounces of weight-bearing components inside the building and allows adaptable floor plans. The upwards screwing building geometry is a result oft he site analyses, based on climatic factors as well as an optimized adjustment for the views from inside of the building. Furthermore the building form reflects the surrounding dynamic (pedestrian and motorized traffic), as well as the movement inside the building.
