Abstract Cargo bikes, bikes with custom-built platforms for goods transportation, are a significant alternative solution to motorized vehicles in urban freight traffic. These ecologically beneficial vehicles can lead to environmental and social improvements, as well as cost savings for the users. For a successful transfer of urban freight transportation to cargo bikes an appropriate awareness raising and a wide based promotion are essential. Furthermore general conditions can be established by planning and regulating policies that support a commercial and private use. In this regard, there are different types of cargo bikes that can be uncommittedly used for specific activities. It turns out that a shift to these vehicles implies a significant potential in urban freight transport. Courier services, for example, could use the cargo bikes for heavy transports or within round trips. This application is just as well suitable for a broad mass of companies because cargo bikes are cheaper than motorized vehicles. In addition, they are also an affordable and attractive alternative to transport shopping or leisure items for private use. In this thesis the potentials regarding the shift of motorized freight transportation to cargo bikes are analysed and presented. Therefore different categories of freight traffic are part of the research. By using a cost comparison method it can be shown that cargo bikes and certain additional features can lead to carrying businesses` operational costs savings since purchasing und running these is much cheaper than classic commercial vehicles. Hence, distribution systems can be operated cost-efficiently, whereby also customers` benefits are gained. Furthermore, private persons can save a vast quantity of household expenses too. In particular, if no motorized vehicles are available, it is shown to be useful to resort to a use of cargo bikes. In addition to the economical advantages, environmental improvements can also be achieved by the use of cargo bikes that are low-emission. Based on calculations of emissions it can be shown that with less used trucks or cars large amounts of air pollutants can be saved in the commercial and, in particular, in the private sector. Moreover to these quantifiable amounts, less noise is emitted in urban areas. Furthermore, cargo bikes counteract street congestions and represent a significant component of an environmentally friendly and sustainable city logistics. However, these positive effects can only be achieved through appropriate conditions, which support the use of cargo bikes. Passivity on the part of the city administration or traffic planning can affect and limit the shift of transportation significantly. Thus essential requirements concerning for instance infrastructure or financial policies are mentioned.
