In this thesis unused office buildings from the early 1970s are discussed from the construction point of view. Aim is to rate the construction of existing buildings and, if possible, to rededicate them into school buildings. Hence, the main topic of this thesis is the redevelopment of office buildings into school buildings. In the 1960s and 70s there was a high building rate of offices in Vienna. These buildings reached their economic lifetime and are actually vacant. Because the empty space amounts to 725.000 m2, it is wise to find another use for the existing buildings. If this is possible, a lot of energy and materials could be saved. The Austrian school system will be reorganised because of educational and structural changes. New space for better and full-time support is needed. In addition, the need of school buildings rises. A lot of influences on existing buildings and school buildings are shown. The most important factor is the inventory control. The higher the accuracy of the inventory, the higher are the informations about the structure and the materials. Then it is possible to give a statement on the state of construction and the possible redevelopment. Because of the load capacity proof the redevelopment is possible under low constructural measures. The restructure of an office building into a school building, is possible under constructural and statical consideration. The advantage of a redevelopment is the economic and ecologic handling with ressources.
