With the increase of loads and traffic on the road network, damages in the road construction occur leading to the fatigue of the materials. Therefor, durable pavements are necessary, which require only little maintenance. Concrete pavements provide a long service life and prove their economic and technical efficiency. In the context of the research along with the assessment of the influence of factors on the service life of the concrete slabs, there is also a description of the influence of the damage stage, course of strain and cracking mechanisms of fatigue. The investigated method for determining the fatigue allows estimation of the tolerable load cycles to failure. From the analysis of various fatigue factors it is obvious that the fatigue strength of the concrete depends on the number of load repetitions, flexural strength of the concrete, climatic conditions and slab geometry. It was found that there are differences in the fatigue behavior of concrete specimens under static and dynamic loading, bending and splitting tensile loading, different stress range and stress ratio and as well as testing in the laboratory and in the field. The results from this research should contribute to further development of the design method in Austria for concrete pavements with the consideration of fatigue and other relevant factors. The present work is structured in the following order. The first part represents the basic knowledge about the fatigue behavior of road concrete. Next, various fatigue criteria are described and compared. The thesis provides valuable information about the influences on the design of concrete slabs. At the end there is a presentation of the design methods is in Austria, in Germany and in the United States.
