The aim of the project is the design of a multifunctional arts and culture space in Sibiu, Romania, a space that can be adapted to the needs of different types of events. Sibiu is the cultural capital of Transylvania, whose yearly rich art program reflects the shapes of a multicultural and multilingual city. The motto of Sibiu, "City of Culture - City of Cultures" is the result of centuries- old cultural traditions and artistic heritage. The architecture of the city stands as testimony of a story whose beginning dates back in the 12th century, when German-speaking settlers founded the city. Since then, different cultures, languages and beliefs shaped the life of the city. Back in 2007, Sibiu was appointed European Capital of Culture, a status that enriched the cultural landscape even more. As part of the Capital of Culture program, a diverse range of art genres has been presented: theatre, painting, music, film, dance, literature architecture, gastronomy, etc.. Seven years later, the multitude of cultural events remained almost unchanged. With the diverse and rich cultural landscape of the city, currently there is no adequate venue for larger artistic and cultural events. My project proposes a solution to this situation by designing a building which ensures a versatile use of the space. Both innovative and functional design as well as technical quality are prerequisites for the creation of a universe which meet the wishes of different stakeholders. The role of this space is to combine the cultural tradition of the city with the modern, contemporary art and culture and act like a micro-cosmos of arts within the city of Sibiu in witch artists and the public as such are united. The designed space shall praise the culture and the sustainable cultural development of the city. It shall not only serve as a place where culture takes place but shall convert the surroundings into a larger cultural zone.
