Abstract Title: Culture meets telecommunication as opportunity for the sustainable development of the rural area. Reviewed by using the example of the "Cyber Village" in Colletta di Castelbianco, Italy. Topic: This thesis concerns itself with the project "cyber village" in Colletta di Castelbianco as an example for private project realization in the rural area. It represents an attempt to determine all of the project-s basis elements concerning its actors, actions and processes as well as its consequences for the surrounding area and to evaluate these topics critically. Background: The development and the preservation of the character of the rural area become increasingly more important as the depopulation of the countryside continues. The main difficulty lies in identifying and developing the correct measures, which may be able to help to arrest this process. This thesis highlights an example, which is analyzed concerning its success in a social, cultural and economic context. Hypothesis: Can the rural area be sustainably developed to become an inhabited, functioning agglomeration by utilizing telecommunication combined with unique cultural activities? Consequently this development can only occur if the project development is based on a unique feature that will remain unique. Method: The approach for this thesis bases on exploratory research. It highlights qualitative as well as quantitative aspects. Expert interviews and research build the base for the conclusions. In a second step the results of this research will be analyzed to determine the possible transferability to other regions. Thesis: During the research the necessity of a number of cumulative, profitable factors could be determined. Special emphasis is placed onto the unique feature. The scientific question of this thesis concerning -telecommunication- has been made redundant by the technological and social developments in recent years and has therefore been rebutted. More significant factors exist, i.e. development skills, etc. Keywords: Countryside, Telecommunication, Cyber Village, Culture, Project development.
