On the following pages, I'd love to introduce you into my diploma project, called: "flexible membrane pavilions for public spaces". The main aim of this work is, to present a completely new kind of flexible architecture. Its purpose is, to discover cities, in interaction with its surroundings. I created a pavilion, which is able to drive, swim and - in a way - also to fly. To explain how it exactly works I will divide my explanation in two parts. The first part is the so-called "hard case". It's an aluminium construction, you can sit in and drive through a city like in a car. With the difference, that it looks way more exciting and is powered by an electrical engine. It's based on two aluminium shells, which are connected to each other through a motor-operated thread. This allows it, to transform its appearance, fitting to the current situation. You can spin the shells' so depending on the direction, it will unroll or furl the two parts. The one position makes it compact and easy to move, the other one- the unrolled position offers a lot of space to use inside. On the outside of this construction, four "legs" are attached, where multifunctional wheels are fixed on. The second part, I'll explain is the "softcase". It's the title of the constructions "membrane" concept. With the unbelievable flexibility and lightness of the material, it's possible that the pavilion carries huge bubbles with it, which can be inflated if you need to have a lot of space to use. It offers you the possibility, to pack those "spaces" easily. Without the usage of a lot of space inside the hardcase, you can carry it with you on your expedition. If you find a place, where you'll stay for a while, you just have to open the membrane box and inflate the bubbles. Within seconds, huge indoor space will unfold themselves. Overall, I wanted to create a piece of architecture, which is temporary and "open minded". It shall offer its users the possibility to enjoy public spaces however, they want to. The beauty of cities depends on the eye of the beholder. With my "flexible membrane pavilion" you can discover any city on your personal way. The most charming places of a city are often hidden and those, nobody will offer you. With this piece of architecture, you have the best chances to find them.
