Gainfarn castle probably originates in the 17th century and was used as a manor by aristocratic families until about 100 years ago. To obtain information on the origin, development and changes of the castle and the park over time, a variety of historical sources, maps, and photographs were analysed and evaluated. These days, a part of the castle is already used by the local music school, whereas many provisional solutions have become permanent since years. Necessary repairs and adaptations were time and again implemented on the castle. However, a holistic restoration of the castle was never done previously and is urgently required. To be prepared for future use as a cultural complex, a complete refurbishment and restoration of the existing building as part of a comprehensive restructuring concept is necessary. Based on an analysis of existing damages, a lot of different actions will be taken for the restoration and adaptation of the castle according to preservation standards. The existing historic building alone cannot meet the requirements of the future use as a multi-functional cultural area, so a contemporary annex containing event facilities for modern use, also considering the music school, is designed.
