The thesis "wood- glass- composite constructions used in thermal puffer zones - prototypical realization as an example of an enlargement of a building" discusses the topic of wood- glass composite façades in building practice. The trend of modern architecture requires transparent building materials such as glass. Wood- glass composite façades not only take on this architectural requirement, but also the horizontal load transfer. Thus conventional building bracing is not necessary for a static functioning building.
Dimensioning methods for this novel building design were developed at the Institute of Architectural Sciences Structural Design and Timber Engineering in Vienna. In order to launch this product onto the market, as a first step, a prototype building in Vösendorf (winter garden) is used to put the theoretical calculations examined in the laboratory into practice. The aim of this thesis is to further develop this construction design, which has been hardly used so far, in order to find practical building applications which are state of the art, are functioning and represent the most current technology and science.
As an introduction to the topic the thesis starts off with describing the individual components and the most important calculation models.
This is followed by the discussion of the range of topics construction, statics, building permission and building physics related to the prototype winter garden. Parallel to this, variation studies to the individual topics for different implementation possibilities for wood- glass- composite façades were carried out. Therefore different bonding systems such as solely shear bonding, shear bonding with blocking and exclusively blocked panes are described. The system on which is put the most emphasise is solely shear bonding and the blocked panes which are developed and patented at the Institute of Architectural Sciences Structural Design and Timber Engineering in Vienna. Up to now, no building practical experience has been gained with these patented systems.
